Screening Battery Calibration

Turning subjective observation into comparable data.

Work on making the FitQuest screening battery score consistently across different assessors, sites and sessions — so two assessments can actually be compared.

〉The work[2]

01The problem with a score you can't compare

Developmental assessment carries a lot of assessor judgement. Two clinicians observing the same child can record meaningfully different scores, and the same clinician can drift over months.

That variance is tolerable for a single clinical impression. It is fatal for a trajectory, because you cannot tell whether a change in score reflects a change in the child or a change in who was holding the clipboard.

02What calibration means here

Standardising how items are administered and scored, so the battery produces the same number for the same behaviour regardless of site.

Measuring inter-rater agreement rather than assuming it, and treating disagreement as information about the instrument rather than about the assessor.

Keeping the final clinical call with the clinician. Calibration is about the measurement, not about automating the judgement built on top of it.
